Self-Coaching Tip: Outcome goals vs. Action Goals

Think of an outcome goal as a place you would like to be. Typically these are medium to long term goals. Outcome goals must always be supported by behavioral goals. Think of the outcome goal as the destination and the behavioral goal as the road.

  • Follow the SMART goal formula and set a time limit to your outcome goal. For example “I would like to lose 30 pounds in the next 4 months.”
  • Define how you are going to measure your progress. “I will weigh myself each week on Monday morning and track my weight in the Vida app.” Having consistent way to measure your progress is important because it will let you know if your plan is working
  • Next, create the behavioral goals/action steps that are going to help you reach your outcome goal. Think of the behavioral goals as your rituals. Your rituals are lifestyle changes that are going to help you not only reach your goals but also maintain changes.
  • If you are not on track with reaching your outcome goal, don’t give up! Assess your behavioral goals to see what you can do differently. And of course, strategize with your Vida Coach!
