Do You Have a Gut Feeling?
Keeping your gut healthy is important to help ward off a multitude of diseases including diabetes, obesity and chronic fatigue syndrome among others. A great way to keep your gut healthy is to eat foods that promote intestinal health. Here are some great--and maybe odd-- foods that will keep your gut happy!
- Go to the fermentation station! Eat foods with (good) bacteria that have been fermented such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir or kombucha. Fermented foods have probiotics that will keep your gut and intestinal tract happy
- Garlic is wonderful for your immune system and has fantastic antibacterial properties
- Turmeric is a wonderful spice to have for many reasons, one of them being that it has anti-inflammatory properties which can help heal your gut. Make it a staple in your recipes!
- Have yourself some asparagus! Asparagus is great for your overall health and has magnesium which is necessary for digestive enzymes
- Jicama helps the body produce “good” bacteria. Try it as a crunchy mid-afternoon snack in place of chips!
- Pick up some leeks! Like asparagus, leeks have magnesium and they are also full of vitamin A which helps heal the gut wall
