Are you Ready to Change Your Health?
Where are you in your journey to wellness? What is it about your health that you want to change? How ready are you to change? These are all important questions. There are several stages known as the Stages of Change or Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change. Knowing where you are is a great way to decide what you will work on. You may be more ready to change certain aspects of your health than others.
These are the stages and a description of them:
Pre-Contemplation:
I Won’t - not interested in change because they do not feel as though their behavior is a problem.
I Can’t - Believe in the importance of change but bogged down by doubt and reasons why they “can’t”, high emotion, litany of reasonsContemplation: I May - People may not be sure how to change during this stage. They want to change but also want to stay the same. They are weighing the pros and cons of that..Thinking about a change in the next 6 months.
Preparation: I Will - Planning to start doing a behavior in the next 30 days. They are thinking about how they can change, making a plan and maybe even taking some action. Becoming more committed to change.
Action: I Am - Have been doing the behavior for less than 6 months. They are trying new ways to change and may be sharing this with other people. There is a high risk of lapse and relapse back to preparation at this stage. Note that there is a distinction between lapse and relapse. A lapse is a single slip in a desired behavior that may or may not lead to a relapse. Whether a lapse becomes a relapse depends on the individual’s response to lapses, their perceived loss of control, and their social network.
Maintenance: I Still Am - Behavior has been maintained for at least 6 months.
